As a Fronterizo, Borderlands Artist...
I stand against policies that are dismantling our protections dramatically, unprecedented actions endangering our stability and the baseless attacks on immigrant communities.
As the great Nina Simone stated,
"It's an artist's duty to reflect the times in which we live"
I will continue to use the surrealism that exudes from my imagination to stimulate and challenge viewers into other paradigms of perception, but also to uplift and remind us of our shared humanity, dignity, culture, and our right to exist.
Painting: I’ll be Back’ (2021), Barrio Logan, CA
At the end of Donald Trump’s first presidency, Mezarte painted a portrait of the outgoing President. Titled “I’ll Be Back,” this artwork portrays Trump in zombie form, serving as a chilling foreshadowing of his potentially more grotesque and vicious return. This piece reflects Mezarte’s unique perspective as a border thinker, analyzing the larger picture and signaling Trump as the embodiment of anti-immigrant sentiment that has steadily grown over the past decade. By depicting Trump in such a way, Mezarte underscores the pervasive fear and hostility that has marked recent political discourse. This portrayal not only captures the unsettling nature of Trump’s rhetoric but also serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by immigrant communities under such an administration.
Mural: 'Build the Wall’ (Summer 2018), San Ysidro, CA
In 2015, Donald Trump launched his first presidential campaign vowing to build a wall along the U.S./Mexico border claiming Mexico would pay for it. Despite US funds ultimately covering the cost, "Build the Wall" became a prominent MAGA rallying cry. After his inauguration, Mezarte painted the Build the Wall mural at the San Diego border town of San Ysidro, with the aim of highlighting the absurdity of Trump’s capricious delusions - building a wall that already existed and the falsehood of it being Mexico’s financial burden.
