Raised as a Fronterizo from the San Diego/Tijuana borderlands, Gerardo Meza (aka Mezarte) is influenced by ‘border thinking’ as a reflection of his lived experiences. Border thinking emerges from critical reflections on immigration, structures of power and thinking from the margins, but can also extend to thinking from spaces of in-betweenness.
Much of Mezarte’s creations come from a surrealist state of in-betweenness. His works explore our animalistic instincts ranging from the disgusting to the arousing and everything that may persist in our subconscious, particularly that which may be deemed as taboo.
His surrealist works touch on a wide range of topics, often focusing on the corruption of humanity’s most primal desires — sex, rivalry and power. This exploration raises a provocative question: "If our deepest fantasies were to be revealed, would shame deprive us of sleep?"
Meza is a visual artist who believes in merging living spaces with the arts, steering away from conventional venues and instead embracing everyday environments. His characters live among us, just as likely to be found drinking in a cantina as praying in abbeys and nunneries, creating their own narratives amidst our daily lives.
